What if you can only carry one firearm:
-
Evaluate your circumstances and budget to make the correct choice.
-
What is your local law enforcement carrying?
-
What are the local hunters using?
-
Rifle recommendation: AR-15
-
It's lightweight; only 6-9 lbs. and collapses for smaller or larger users
-
Reliable
-
Can switch parts to shoot a .223, 5.56mm or .22 rim fire. These are common types of ammo and very prevalent.
-
Has option for bayonet
-
Handgun recommendation - Ruger SR9C 9 mm compact
-
Toby's favorite
-
Reliable
-
Robust
-
Polymer alloys prevent rust
-
But it has a magazine disconnect so if you do not have extra magazines you are not going to be shooting it. Think about stocking extras.
Thoughts on Black Powder:
-
Modern black powder guns use manufactured primers. They will need to be stocked.
-
You need a flintlock weapon from about 200+ years ago where the powder was ignited from a spark created in the pan.
-
The black powder is made from salt peter, charcoal, and sulfur but not many people would know how to whip some up.
-
The lead balls used as a bullet can be melted but do not fire accurately if they have air pockets and imperfections. A good place to find lead is the lead allow in wheel weights on cars. Gold and silver can also be meted for bullets.
No Ammo = A Club
-
The average person only has about 1 to 2 gunfights worth of ammo
-
Find out how much the military sends out with a soldier to gauge what you should have. Common suggestion: 1,000 rounds/caliber of gun.
-
Be conscientious of space and weight of your ammo.
-
Use an ammo that is commonly used by the military, law enforcement, hunters, etc. so bartering is a better prospect.
-
Buy what you can afford and safely store. Keep it in a dry, dark, and cool place.
