In the Day After Disaster adventure Erika is finally free of her bomb shelter cell and navigates the watery city of Sacramento. She makes her way towards the familiar foothills battling the circumstances of open water survival. Today, The Nautical Prepper, Captain William E. Simpson II is back to discuss how things to consider when using a boat as a long term bug-out tool.

3 Open Water Bug Out Priorities:

  • Learn skills and practice before you ever have to use your boat! You’re in a foreign environment, know CPR and first aid, learn navigation, meteorology, communications and vessel operation and maintenance.

  • Find the right boat. Do your homework and make sure it is the right boat for the job.

  • Have the right attitude and mental state. Being out at sea is a tough mental challenge. When it’s water from horizon to horizon it’s scary for some folks.

Navigation Tools on the Open Water:

  • Have multiple levels of fallback and multiple systems to back those up.

  • Most radio and GPS systems have some shielding built in to protect from energy surges.

  • If your GPS were to fail big ships and planes use inertial navigation systems that use a series of gyroscopes for navigation. They must be updates as you progress but they are fairly accurate.

  • Celestial navigation – anybody can get a gray plastic sexton. They are good to use on land as well as water as long as you can get high enough to see the horizon.

At Sea Communications:

  • Short wave radios are good and can communicate over thousands of miles easily.

  • Signal side band radios or ham radios are also an important communication tool. These allow you to connect with other survivors and see what is going on.

  • CB radios or citizens band radios are also less expensive and good to have. They can communicate 500-1000 miles.

  • Power your radios with solar, wind or hand crank.

Captian William E. Simpson II

Capt. William E. Simpson II is a U.S. Merchant Marine Officer with decades of boating and expedition sailing experience, having logged more than 150,000 miles at sea. Capt. Simpson has successfully survived long-term 'off the grid' at sea and at remote uninhabited desert islands with his family for years at a time. In early 2013, Capt. Simpson appeared on National Geographic's hit TV show DoomsDay Preppers (Season-2 'A Fortress At Sea') and received the highest score ever given for disaster preparedness and survival, earning the title of 'Best Prepper'. He holds a U.S.C.G. 500-ton captain's license for commercial-inspected passenger vessels and he is also a commercial airplane and helicopter pilot.. In 1987 Capt. Simpson received a commendation from the U.S. Coast Guard Honolulu Sector for his assistance in the successful rescue of two sailors lost overboard at sea. In 2010, Capt. Simpson was again instrumental in the successful rescue operation of an American sailor lost over-board in the Sea of Cortez in hazardous seas. Capt. Simpson is also an accomplished writer covering disaster preparedness. His work has been featured and republished via numerous magazines and websites and he has been a featured guest on various disaster preparedness radio talk shows.
