Many people can think of some great excuses as to why they aren't physically active. The bottom line is that physical fitness is create for your body but it also correlates directly to mental health. Upon visiting many of the preparedness trade shows that I have had the honor to attend, I've seen people with more gear than they could ever dream of using, while their bodies lack the basic ability to function properly. If you can't carry your gear and protect yourself all of that stuff is useless.

Weight  training is great but always choose endurance exercises over the amount of weight you can physically lift. In a disaster scenario, if you can lift two hundred pounds once, you will be outworked by a smaller individual who can keep lifting a lighter weight throughout the day. You need long lean muscles that are ready to go the extra mile. Bulky muscles take power to run and burn out fast. For cardio endurance, I would rather see you walking the trails with a pack on your back than running on a treadmill.

There are no excuses. Physically preparing your body doesn't take much space. I read a book about a guy who used to kick out his open window to practice his kicks because his space was so limited. It doesn't take money either. You can use old milk jugs filled with water, concrete or wood to supplement weights found at the gym. If endurance is your focus, using your own body weight will be sufficient to make you stronger.

Start slow and go. The important thing is to keep going. Listen to your body and make sure that you are physically capable of the exercises you want to do. Make sure you don't over listen to your body though. Remember, your mind will want to quit way before your body is tapped.. Get a trainer to help you or alternately find a trainer who owns a kick boxing or martial arts school where you can get physically fit and learn self defense all at once.

Learning in a class setting is more important than you think. You commit yourself to the school and the teacher will expect you to be there. This raises your commitment level and ensures you will actually do it. It's a great place to meet other individuals with goals in line with yours. Some of those individuals you will even form a friendship with and then they will expect you to be there, making it even more likely you will actually go. Also in a class setting, you will push yourself harder because of the competition surrounding you.

There are fitness apps available. Some are pretty good and a place to start if you are nervous about stepping out into public. For the Android I found the 30 day fitness challenge, which had a lot of great, basic exercises. Also there were some Krav Maga, kickboxing and taekwondo apps that I found interesting. However, you are staring at a phone in your house. To accelerate your training, you really need someone who is trained that can teach and critique your movements.
