Fitness will keep you stay healthy but it may be the difference between survival and death in a natural disaster. Your body is your number one tool for anything. It is your primary weapon, transport, tractor, chopper, and it must be ready to perform when you need it. In a natural disaster, this range of motion and muscle structure is critical to your survival.

Older folks who are moving less and even younger folks, who spend too much time on stationary activities like video games, are at critical risk for system failure. You have to move to make muscle! There is no magic pill.

Being prepared for a survival situation doesn’t start with stuff or even knowledge. Say you fill a go-bag up with everything you need to survive, can you carry it? How far could you go? Are you putting your heart at risk because you are not used to physical labor?

Test yourself by getting up from your chair. Do you need your arms to help you do that? If you do, you need to work on your core strength, leg strength, and balance. How is your grip strength? As we age, it declines. It’s a good idea to squeeze a stress ball or the handspring designed to improve it.

As previously mentioned, balance is a big deal. As we get older, we tend to rely on vision, not instinct and muscle. An excellent exercise to test your skills is (with something to hold onto) try standing on one leg. If you can do that, try closing your eyes. If you can do that, try bouncing on that one leg. Even walking for just ten minutes a day over uneven ground is a great start to get you going.

Everyone has problems self-motivating. It is not an easy thing to do. Try joining a class. In a class, you will meet people with common goals. You begin to expect to see them, and they hope to see you. This connection will hold you accountable to your regiment. If you are scared of being in society, join an online social media group that works together to hold each other responsible for their individual workout goals.

Remember, the more you move, the more you move! People living with Arthritis are advised to keep moving to help mobility improve. Many of my aches and pains are not as severe when I am working out because there is more muscle to support my joints.

If you want to survive, you have to keep moving and increase your agility! You can do it!
